Race Report: 3M Half Marathon 2016
Goal time: Sub 1:30:00
Finish Time: 1:26:12
Weather: The weather was perfect for any race. Cold and low humidity (felt like 36.0° and 80% humidity).
Food: The night before I had some tofu, chicken and a protein bar. I ate way too many cookies (Girl Scout Cookie Season) the day before the race. I am not sure if the sugar helped or hurt me. In the morning I had two pieces of Ezekiel bread with Chobani Greek yogurt and 1.5 cups of coffee. Right before the race I had 3 Bonk Breaker Energy Chew and Beet Elite.
Play-by-play: I took 48 hours of rest with only a morning workout on Friday at CrossFit Round Rock. I got a b12 shot at Downtown Doctor to help with recovery on Saturday afternoon. On race day, I wore trishorts, my beef team shirt and arm warmers. I arrived at the race at 6:30 a.m. and warmed up for .5 of a mile about 10 minutes before the start of the race.
I got swept up into a crowd the first couple of miles. This was a fast course and even faster people came out to run it. Usually I hold back until mile 4 and then I start working hard. However, I starting working at mile 2 (I stayed in Zone 4 during the race ~168 – 175 bpm). I took in water a mile 5 and 9 (very small sips) and ate a 2 bonk breaker chews at mile 7.
I was feeling the burn at mile 10 and decided to sit in my pace instead of push it. After mile 11, I decided to give it what I gave left and picked up the tempo as much as I could. I looked at my watch to see my pace and saw I was hitting around 6:30 and figured if I could keep that, I should hit my goal.
I was happy that I got a sub 1:30, but I wasn’t surprised. I found confirmation in what I do and how I train.
I placed 17th female overall in the 3M Half Marathon 2016. My time was 1:26:12.8 at a pace of 6:35/mile. There were 3,100 women which placed me at the top .5% of all women in this race. Of the top 20 women, 8 of them were in my age group, putting me 8th in my age group. Over 5,000 completed the race and I placed 125th (a little low, but I’ll get them next time).
